Quiz

Next event: TBC

Held annually, this is a fun evening of quizzing while raising money to cover storage costs for the Federation. Teams are made up of four quizzers and each Institute can enter two teams. However if your Institute doesn’t have enough quizzers to make up a team, individuals are welcome to apply and composite teams can be arranged. Please bring along a raffle prize, your cup and supper – tea/coffee will be served in the interval. Cost is £5.00 per member.

Entries online below or email [email protected] by 30th September 2025.

A great time at our annual quiz last night! 155 quizzers from 23 institutes, amazing looking suppers, and lots of head scratching. Victors were Fowlis & Liff SWI and runners up Colliston SWI. Congratulations to both teams. £775 was raised on the door and £578 on the raffle to cover our storage costs. The change collection at the end for the quizmaster’s radio station raised a further £250. A huge thank you to our quizmaster David for all his hard work and to everyone who came along for your generosity. See you next year.”

Soloists, Duets & Choirs

Next event: TBC

This competition is for soloists, duets and choirs of up to 25 voices, plus a conductor and musical accompanist(s) (who need not be SWI members). One set piece and one own choice piece will be performed. A Massed Choir will be held at the end of the competition.

Rules for the National Finals can be found here.

Variations on a Theme

Next event: 2026

Held in alternate years, this competition is for a team of four. Each team will choose its own selection, and make up its own programme, of prose and poetry readings based on the given theme (six to nine separate pieces within the total time limits of 12 and 15 minutes).  All pieces may be read – they need not be committed to memory (no extra marks will be given for this) but must be read fluently and there should be no emphasis on acting or miming.  No ‘props’, background music or effects are required.  The voices do all the work!

The 2020 Variations on a Theme competition was held in Letham Village Hall on 3rd Feb. What a competition! We had 4 teams entered (Aldbar, Letham & District, Letham & District composite, and Kingsmuir). The competition was fierce with all teams putting in a performance of the highest standard. Our judges David and Marion Birse had a hard job but judged Aldbar to be winners with Letham & District runners up.

Competitions in 2022 and 2024 were unfortunately cancelled.

Matter of Opinion

Next event: 24th February 2025, Lunanhead Hall, 7pm

Held every second year, this competition is for a team of four – a chairman and three panellists. The Chairman introduces the team (up to 2 minutes) and summarises their responses but may not offer an opinion. The teams choose to offer their opinions on at least three of seven statements/questions provided to them within a 16 minute timescale (including the Chairman’s introduction).

This year’s competition, held in February was to the usual very high standards. The adjudicators had a difficult time coming to a decision, however, Menmuir were victorious with Eassie & Nevay runners up. The best Chairman was Carol Steel (Kingsmuir SWI) and Frances Smith (Menmuir SWI) was the best panellist. Thank you to the judges, Mairi for timekeeping, members of Letham SWI for the teas and all the teams for taking part – well done.”

The National Final is held on alternate years (the same day as the National Quiz). The 2023 National Final took place on 15th April 2023 in Banchory when our 2 teams gave an excellent account of themselves. Well done ladies!

Ruralympics

Next event: October 2025

This is a fun event and is a mixture of potted sports and challenges e.g. rolling marbles through numbered arches, netball shooting, catch and throw, hockey dribbling, jigsaw challenge etc. It is a social event with the chance to catch up with other rural members/friends, in between competing, over a cup of tea (there will also be Helen’s famous tablet available again this year!!!).

Please try and enter a team (or 2) and we are also looking for volunteers to keep count of the scores at each activity (6). If you don’t have a full team enter anyway as we can make up combination teams.

What good fun this morning at the Ruralympics. Lots of smiling faces and chatter. Coming away with the medals were Gold: Auchterhouse 2, Silver: Tarfside and Bronze: Westmuir. Very well done to everyone who competed and a huge thank you to everyone who helped make it such a success. Special thanks to Sheila McCallum, Auchterhouse SWI who crocheted the medals.
